Gah, Where Does the Time GO?!

Its already well into June and I've not posted since the 25th. Sad. I always have lots of ideas for posting but seem to forget about them when I'm in front of a computer.

The boys are the best source of ideas as they are constantly changing, getting more independent and capable every day. Seems like Sean is trying a new word every day and walking a bit more while Lukas is exploring his voice and experiencing control over us as he cries when he is not near mommy. Phases, some good some bad.

Of course Lukas has popped to more teeth recently so that could contribute to his moods lately. I'm pretty sure he now has more teeth already through than teeth waiting to get through.

I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend with some friends visiting and maybe a trip to Valleyview farms.

Breathing

We had a doctor's appointment at CHEO with a specialist to see about Lukas' wheezing. The diagnosis is Asthma, specifically "Happy Wheezer".

Needless to say we were not surprised based on our family history and Luke's symptoms. The doctor prescribed an inhaler to take twice a day, keep him away from pet dander, smoking, and wood stoves, and clean up our house more as dust and dust mites can be problematic as well.

There is a good chance he will grow out of it and it does not seem to be bothering him too much yet. Poor guy.

"What's That?"

So Erin and the Kids moseyed on up to Carleton Place for Canada Day (Or Canada Evening by the time Erin got there) and we had a BBQ and visit before Kim and Erin took the Kids to see the fireworks while I babysat the Boys.

I got them to bed and went to bed myself with the baby monitor on and fell asleep before Kim got home. Of course, I had the baby monitor on my side of the bed so I could here better, but never thought to move the power cord that comes with it from Kim's side. Around 5 in the morning Kim wakes up and is surprised no sound from the boys room was heard and she gets up and realizes the battery died in the middle of the night. Poor Sean probably woke up hungry at 3am as normal and cried (well, grunted) himself back to sleep when we didn't show up. I'm a horrible father.

Fortunately, he woke up again soon after and was fed. He seems to have suffered no visible long term effects beyond an accusing glare whenever I'm near.

Erin and the Kids stayed over so last night after dinner I took them to the riverfront to play in the splashpad (which they did a little) and swim in the river (which they did a lot of). Afterwards while trying off I hear one ask "What's that?"

It is, of course, a bloodsucking leech attached to her foot. The other girl realizes she has one too, attached directly to the panic button on her foot. I quickly dispatched the little fiends and calmed the girls down with "its no worse than a mosquito, they are not poisonous or anything like that, just icky." It worked and we were soon on our way.

Side note: first time I've ever encountered a leech up close and personal.

Sibling Rivalry

The boys had their doctor's checkup yesterday and Sean weighed in at just over 7 lbs while Lukas is growing much more slowly at 6 lbs and 10 ounces if I recall correctly. I don't know why Lukas is gaining weight more slowly than his brother, he seems to eat as much but his feedings must not always be as productive as Sean "the Consumer of Milk".

This weekend we are finally going to visit the Kids for the middle child's 10th birthday party. I'm looking forward to seeing them again, its been an extra long time since we last had them up for a weekend and I miss them.

Spring? Where Are You?

Well, Friday evening we were supposed to go to get the Kids for a weekend visit but the snow had started before I got home and it was some sort of nasty hybrid between slush and ice rain that coated the roads and sidewalks with snow that turned to ice as soon as you stepped on it. I went to the store for Kim and nearly wiped out several times. So we cancelled the trip and rescheduled to Sunday since they are on March Break next week.

Kim and I spent Saturday mostly lazing around, watching some TV, and generally doing nothing. Yeah, it was irresponsible since we have lots to do but hey, it felt like a dark mid-winter day and not the almost-spring I was hoping for.

A lot of snow fell. Sunday morning I went out to shovel and spent a few minutes just gawking at the white stuff. It took me about 45 minutes to do the walk and the driveway around the car. Neighbour Steve, the kind soul he is, came over with the Nuclear Powered Military Grade Snow Blower X-1000 and did the end of the driveway that was particularly nasty from the snowplow snow. Thus freed we jumped into the car and drove to get the Kids.

This could be our last visit for a while so we intend to make the most of it before we take them home on Wednesday after work.

Love Me Some Snakes

On the weekend we had the Kids up once again and we were determined to make up for the lousy New Year's outing where Kim and I came down with the flu and we sent them home early.

When we picked the kids up Ophelia was quite excited about reptiles due to some event at school and Kim and I weighed whether or not to go to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo. We were there with the kids in 2003 and had a good time, so figured we would do it again.

Well we had a blast. We were there for over three hours at a cost of $9 each, and we saw tons of animals, there was an awesome hands on demonstration with a tarantula, 8 foot python, baby alligator, and later on a full grown female american alligator. An hour later there was a feeding demonstration with breaded dragons and a king snake (not at the same time of course!).

If you are ever south of Ottawa, I highly recommend a stop at this little zoo.

We are starting to paint the nursery this week so I'll be a little more rushed than usual. Expect sporadic posting.

In A Fog

In a fog both literally and figuratively.

Now that Christmas is over, our life is teetering on the edge. Behind us the well trod ground of marriage of ten years, visits with the Kids, family, and friends. Ahead the unknown chasm of parenthood of our twin boys and all the changes that will occur. The waiting is the hardest part and yet its only 4 shorts months or thereabouts.

There is still lots to do in the meantime. Preparing the nursery with repairs, painting, wallpapering the border, assembling the cribs, stockpiling diapers... but it all seems like restless fidgeting. Bring on the babies! I'm ready and that's all the matters.

It Has Begun

On Saturday Kim and I went to Sears to make use of a sale and made our first big purchases: stroller and carseats.

The carseats we bought have a travel system where the carseat has a base that stays in the car and the seat itself can snap to the base or to the stroller, allowing for easy switching from stroller to car and back. Make traveling just a tad easier.

Side Note: I want this for Christmas.

She's Wearing Me Down!

The experiment of having one child at a time from the group of three Kids has proven enlightening.

Holden was the first week and I thought he would be the challenging one but he turned out to be rather easy. He liked video games; given enough attention he could be counted on to go entertain himself for a little bit of time periodically; he behaved well; he was talkative and asked lots of questions; he liked going to the park and being amused by the monkey bars. Generally speaking he simply liked being around us and was easy to entertain.

Ophelia is up this week. I thought she would be easy but I was mistaken. Her behaviour is exemplary, no question about that. But she seems to miss her sister more than Holden missed either of his siblings. She's a little harder to get talking about stuff, and entertaining herself has proven non-existent until Kim introduced her to the Nintendo DS which hardly counts. Basically I had never realized quite how social she was because before when we had all the kids she and Mikaela could go and play for hours without needing our supervision, whereas Holden would be left out of those playtimes a bit more and get into trouble trying to get attention from either us or the girls.

So one I found easier than expected, the other harder. Makes me wonder what Mikaela, the middle child, has in store for us. It has been my impression that she would be easy because out of the three she has seemed to be able to entertain herself with toys far more than the other two (much like myself as a child) and she is not hard to please. But now I'm less certain in my assessment and must prepare for anything.

On a related note, next week we are gone camping and the week after I am on vacation at home so posting will be dead from this friday until mid August.

Damn, Its Cold!

Frostbite warning, windchill warning, and I swear my feet still have not warmed up since I left the house this morning.

It was chilly on Saturday too, but not as cold as this. Hence we (Kim and myself and the Kids) traveled to Gatineau to partake in Winterlude and enjoy Snowflake Kingdom. Kids had a blast (mostly) and we went home tired and happy. In the evening we went to the movies to watch the latest from Ben Stiller called Night at the Museum in which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. For a family movie I give it 4.5/5 stars.

Back to Work...

Sorry I took a couple extra days to start blogging again. Monday night I was sick as a dog and took Tuesday off to recuperate, and yesterday was catch-up-on-everything day so didn't have the time to do a decent post.

The week off was wonderful but too short. We had lots of family visits, time with the kids, too much good food, and not much in the way of stress. For Christmas I got a new tennis racket I've been itching for as well as some new sweaters and shirts for work, a few movies, a couple computer games, and some Warhammer stuff. Kim enjoyed all of her presents and didn't have to return any this year. I'm getting better. ;)

My father's 49th Birthday was celebrated by going to a Sens game again this year, and I took Holden with me since we had the Kids. He had fun but it was obviously not too enthralling to him; there was a lot of chatter and questions and not a lot of game watching. Oh well, at his age I would have been bored too. BTW, the Sens won over the Rangers, 1-0. W00t.

New Year's Eve we spent as in previous years visiting Kim's sister and her roommate in Kingston, but had to rush home New Year's Day to get ready for work on the Second. That sucked, especially since I was sick that night. I think it was some super-bug flu that my super-enhanced immune system was overcome by for a bit before reasserting its powerful defenses. Kim says it was a cold. I like my explanation better.

One last thing...

Out of all the events over the past couple weeks, I was quite surprised by the rapidity of the sentencing and execution of Saddam Hussein. As you may or may not know, I oppose the death penalty and this case is no exception but I will not be shedding any tears for the tyrant. I still question the method and the speed it was taken care of. Hanging? In the 21st century? As Kim asked, did they not know about lethal injection in Iraq? Kind of barbaric in my opinion. And why the rush so soon after the trial and failed appeal, and during a time of year when many religions are celebrating holidays? Seems ill-advised to me.

But then this whole Iraq debacle has been ill advised in my view. Why change now?

Weekend Is Here!

I felt like crap for most of yesterday, but the physical exercise of class always makes me feel incredibly better. Highly recommend it. Anyway, I got the information I needed on the techniques I didn't know or remember. I should be good to go for Tuesday's test assuming I keep practicing on and off on the weekend.

This weekend Kim is being a good Samaritan and helping her dad with his Christmas shopping tonight and then Erin with her shopping for the Kids tomorrow. Tonight I'm just going to veg while she is out and tomorrow I'm going to hang out with the Kids while the girls are off cavorting around town. Last year the Kids and I went tobogganing but looking outside I think that option is off the table.

Maybe we'll go exploring around town and see what we can find.
