Kim took me to the movies for my birthday Monday evening and we decided to see National Treasure - The Book of Secrets. We saw the first movie back when it came out and enjoyed it so we thought this one would be a solid bet for a good time.
It was ... acceptable. It did not have the sheer enjoyment of the first movie, and felt a little rushed in a lot of parts in the middle (I mean, they spent all of 20 minutes in Paris and London combined), but overall the general flow was at a good pace.
I had a hard time suspending disbelief near the end though. WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD!
City of Gold? In Dakota? Olmec language? Mount Rushmore was to obliterate the land marks? The last third of the movie seemed totally bogus and off the wall, like the writers wanted to out do everything so much in the first movie to the point where they jumped the shark.
Oh and one other thing: who builds a city underground? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Mount Rushmore, yeesh. If I had been the writer, I would have had the city of gold in the rain forests of Central America and not underground, but the cynic in me suggests it was easier on the budget to film in Dakota.
Overall, 3/5 stars: the strong start makes up for some of the ridiculousnesses of the ending.
