Our company recently started a group RRSP program where if you invested into RRSPs offered by the group then the company would match your contribution up to 3% of your annual salary.
I've felt the need to increase savings in this regard for a while so this offer was too good to pass up and I signed up yesterday. During the worksheets and calculations the question was put forth: what age do you intend to retire?
I never really thought about it before. Most of my adult life since getting married was focused on having and raising kids to the point where I never imagined life after they had grown and moved out. Will I retire at 54? 60? Later? I don't know. Considering my kids won't be moving out until I'm in my 50s at the earliest can I afford to retire any sooner?
And what will I do with myself when I retire? Will we move out of a house into an easier to keep apartment or townhouse? Will we travel? Will we be bored all the time?
Fortunately, all these thoughts will be driven out of my head by the kids soon enough.
