Revenge!

Two weeks ago I mentioned that I finally got my revenge on my former employer. Well Andrew had asked me to keep a lid on it until he was ready and the time has come.

In the early summer of 2001 I moved back to Ottawa from Barrie to accept a new job. I was made aware of the company by Andrew and had been looking for work back in the capital for a few months. It was a small company but with lots of promise and hey, I got to work with Andrew. And who knows where we'd be today if 9/11 hadn't happened.

When work dries up at a large company, they can hold out for a while to try and get back on track. A small company like the one I worked for doesn't have that option so some measures had to be taken. I understand that. What I had trouble understanding is why they chose to keep one or two people who were not contributing as much as I could have had I been kept. Heck, one person that the company chose to keep had been downgraded from developer to sale assistant and I had been given their shoddy code to re-write. Which I did to my supervisor's satisfaction. Which pisses me off even more. To add insult to the injury, business picked up about the same time I joined my current job and they ended up hiring a couple more developers.

Although I carry a certain amount of bitterness over being laid off after Christmas in January of '02, I take great comfort that I survived mostly unscathed the period of being laid off for 5 1/2 months, and have a job now where even though things are not perfect, at least I know skill and ability is valued more than "time in" or who has stock options. And I take great pleasure in seeing that Andrew has had enough of that crazy joint and is moving on as well. I am going to miss the emense pleasure of hearing him complain about his old job though.

Disclaimer: It is possible that I was laid off before certain losers employees due to reasons other than nepotism, but I have not been made aware of them. If so, I would be glad to discuss those issue with David at any time.

The decision was 100% tenure based. The only reason you were chosen was because you were the official new guy.
