During this week of sweltering heat, Scott Sheridan, a Kent State associate professor in geography, announced today results of a study funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. He looked into heat-warning systems in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Toronto, and Dayton, Ohio, surveying people 65 and older to see if they heard and heeded warnings.
Nearly 90 percent of the respondents were aware when a heat warning was issued, but only about half of them did anything about it. Now for anyone in mid-life who’s worried about the senior years, here’s a nice finding: Sheridan says many of the respondents thought messages were targeting the elderly and didn’t view themselves as part of that group.
Emphasis mine.
