Last night Bill came home carrying a box. He walked in the door and excitedly showed me his impulse purchase...a new flat-screen computer monitor. Supposedly, he got it for me.
If you remember correctly, Bill got a new 19" flat-screen monitor at work at the beginning of the year. (If not, read this...it's short, promise!) He was drooling over it and I knew it was only a matter of time before we had one at home too.
Last weekend we were at Wal-Mart and as we toured the electronics section we stopped to admire the flat screen monitors. Bill's eyes widened...I agreed that they were nice and that I'd like to get one, maybe in the summer. His ears must've stopped listening right after hearing me say, "I'd like to get one...".
Of course, Bill had an extra "reason" for getting one so soon. You see, I don't like how our computer desk is set up...it's awkward to say the least. I'm short (5'3") and the desk is too high for me, so Bill put in a pull-out tray for the keyboard. This helped, however, the chair we have has arm rests (which I enjoy) and they run into the keyboard tray, keeping me too far away from the desk. I guess the simple solution would be to take the arms off the chair...this would mean work, and you know how we feel about that. Anyways, according to the chart I got from both my chiro. and my physical therapist, the monitor should only be an arm's length away...mine is further, and the 17" screen sometimes made me sit poorly in order to see everything. (My eyes are fine, btw...I wear contacts and just had my eyes checked last year.)
We figured that pulling the screen closer would work...and it probably would have.
The scene:
Bill: I got it on sale!
Kim: Ahhh...
Bill: I got it for you... (um, yeah, right!)
Kim: How big is it?
Bill: 17"
Kim: But that's the same size as the one we have downstairs.
Bill: True, but this is a flat-screen...it will look bigger.
I figured, whatever. We had dinner and then Bill went downstairs to set it up. When he was finished, he called me down to check it out...
The scene:
Bill: Here, sit down...what do you think!?
Kim: Ummm, it doesn't look any bigger to me.
Bill: ...but...look, we can pull it closer!
Kim: I mean, it's pretty, sure...but what's the point of buying a new monitor if it's not bigger...isn't that what you wanted?
Bill: Ummm...
Basically the rest of the conversation was me asking Bill if he was sure this was the one he wanted...I mean, there's no point to getting a 17" now if he wants to get a 19" in the summer, right? So, after talking for a few minutes we decided that he would take it back and get what we really wanted...and now I have a pretty 19" flat screen...can't wait to play The Sims on it :)
...I know what you're thinking...how does a guy get his wife to talk him into buying a bigger and better monitor and spending more money?? I don't know...Bill's the master...he got what he wanted afterall and made me believe that it was my idea...he's a genius.
