Week 1

The first few days of any lifestyle change is always the easiest mentally while being the hardest physically.

Physically, if you have changed your diet your body is craving the sugars and salts and proteins at the volume it was receiving them before and goes through withdrawal symptoms as you cut back. That's the huge hunger cravings and irritability. And on top of that your stomach is probably used to being fuller so you never feel full even when you eat. And if you start up some exercise after being off it for a significant while, those first few sessions are full of a lot of huffing, puffing, and extremely sore muscles.

But on the other side of the coin, mentally you are at your most committed. Your enthusiasm is high, you're going to do this! You probably will notice a drop of a few pounds in the first week as your body sheds the extra crap in your digestive system you've been maintaining for so long. You feel so proud of your new exercise regime that the aches and pains and bruises are badges of honour.

So typically the first couple weeks are safe and no backsliding will occur. My Week 1 was no exception as I kept under my calorie limits every day and got to my minimum 2 jiu jitsu classes this week. The first weekend was successfully navigated as well but we stayed home so I had complete control over the food and environments. Its when I'm out at a special or social event where the dangers of backsliding lie. But for now, we've off to a good start and my immediate Christmas pre-resolution bingeing weight has been purged.

Now things start to get harder.
