So yesterday the father in law was up and began the effort of painting the nursery which I helped with when I got home from work. We're going with some sort green paint and an off white trim. The first coats went on yesterday and a second coat today.
Once the painting it done, I'm going to replace the outlets and switch with matching fixtures, assemble the cribs, and basically get this show on the road.

Dear Catholic Church: Welcome to the 20th Century
Catholic Church to ease ban on condom use
Wow, thanks for almost joining us in the 21st century. Bah, its not like a lot of people paid attention to the "ban" anyways.

Love Me Some Snakes
On the weekend we had the Kids up once again and we were determined to make up for the lousy New Year's outing where Kim and I came down with the flu and we sent them home early.
When we picked the kids up Ophelia was quite excited about reptiles due to some event at school and Kim and I weighed whether or not to go to Little Ray's Reptile Zoo. We were there with the kids in 2003 and had a good time, so figured we would do it again.
Well we had a blast. We were there for over three hours at a cost of $9 each, and we saw tons of animals, there was an awesome hands on demonstration with a tarantula, 8 foot python, baby alligator, and later on a full grown female american alligator. An hour later there was a feeding demonstration with breaded dragons and a king snake (not at the same time of course!).
If you are ever south of Ottawa, I highly recommend a stop at this little zoo.

We are starting to paint the nursery this week so I'll be a little more rushed than usual. Expect sporadic posting.

Movement
I felt Sean move in Kim's belly last night. I think I had felt one of the boys before but last night was the first "confirmed" movement.
Kim hit 24 weeks today and with our aim at 36 weeks as "full term for twins", that means we are 2/3rds of the way through this pregnancy. On the downhill slope. Finally.
Next week we are painting the nursery and then assembling the cribs. Before you know it it will be April or May and we'll be a family of four.

Evil Genius Test
Evil courses through my blood. Lies and deceit motivate my evil deeds. Crushing the weaklings and idiots that do nothing but interfere in my doings.
Movie Review: I Am Ledgend
The movie I Am Legend starring Will Smith is based on the short classic novel of the same name by Richard Matheson which I happened to read just last year. Kim and I took in the movie Monday evening as we had a 2 for 1 coupon and it was expiring soon.
The movie was good. Not great, but as a stand alone flick it was watchable. The tension build up in one scene in particular was quite well done but failed to re-materialize fully during the rest of the movie. I wasn't fond of the last third of the movie, it was a little too pat and simplistic for me.
The movie's resemblance to the novel is passing at best. By far the novel is superior in character and ending, I'd recommend reading it before watching the Hollywood version.
* * * * *
On a related note, when I read someone earlier review of the movie they commented how Will Smith's character was another "angry atheist", the only kind of atheist that explicitly gets shown in movies it seems.
An "angry atheist" is one who has some sort of personal tragedy that makes them come to think that God doesn't exist; in other words, if bad things happen to other people its just the mysterious ways of God but if it happens to them, they take their belief and stomp away like a petulant child. For reference, Mel Gibson in Signs, Hillary Swank in The Reaping, John Cusack in 1408, and now Will Smith in I Am Legend.
Of course, the odds are stacked against these former believers as they are in movies that represent reality where God does indeed exist and events unfold that convince them that their unbelief is wrong, either subtly as in Signs and I Am Legend or very explicitly as in The Reaping and 1408.
It would be nice if there was a movie that portrayed someone who was an atheist who came to not believe through careful consideration and thought but unless the movie is supernatural to begin with, exploring character's religious beliefs or lack thereof is typically not a priority to the story. So if one got all their information from movies or TV you could be under the impression that all atheists are "angry atheists" and that are no true atheists as some religious leaders claim.

How Old Are You?
I was watching a comedian the other day and he started making fun of creationists of the stripe that believe the earth was created in its present form by God 6000 or so years ago. It wasn't very funny, only chuckle-worthy.
I turned to the person watching beside me who I know is religious and I commented, "Probably not very funny to you at all, eh?"
They responded with "One day to us is not the same thing to God." That is to say, the bible could be correct in Genesis if one took a liberal meaning to the word "day". Were the six days actual days (i.e. 24 hours, one rotation of the earth on its axis) or were they metaphorical "days" (i.e. thousands, perhaps millions of years)?
If you go with the former, you have to face a lot of evidence that you are just plain wrong: geological, biological, astrophysicalogical... everything together points to either an earth that is millions or billions of years old or an earth that looks like it is millions or billions of years old.
But if you go with the latter (not ladder as Kim was so quick to point out a few posts ago) you have leeway around that evidence. It allows one to have faith that God did all the work without having to purposefully ignore or misconstrue mountains of evidence. To me this is the more logical approach even if I still disagree with it.
I wonder how many religious people fall into each category and which is the majority? I suspect the Young Earth Creationists but I don't know for sure.

Hell Week
The super busy week at work is over and I'm only now starting to get back to normal in terms of schedule. This weekend is pretty quiet for Kim and I with the major project being the preparation of the nursery for painting by filling the nail holes and sanding them down.

Insanity!
This week is insane week at work, and throw in some doctor's appointments (one for my surgery follow up, one for regular chiropractic, and one for getting settled with the High Risk OB unit in the Civic hospital) and you have an exhausted blogger.
Is it Friday yet? No? ONLY TUESDAY?!
Sigh.

That and That
I was getting the frying pan out of the cupboard last night when my grip on it slipped and it fell. My ninja-like reflexes allowed me to sprawl my feet out of the way before the heavy appliance crushed the bones in my feet. However, my left knee jerked up straight head on with the open cupboard door with a resounding crack.
I swear I thought I had shattered my kneecap it hurt so bad. I was about ready to hobble out to the car and drive to the hospital for a full leg cast, I thought I would never walk again. And then after thirty seconds or so of intense pain it faded and today it barely hurts at all. Weird.
* * * * *
That damn rodent is in the attic moving around above our bedroom again. Now that I have a real latter capable of letting me get into the attic, I'm going to get that little sucker.
* * * * *
Driving in icy conditions is never fun. I blame Andrew. In a totally unrelated point, yesterday was Andrew's Birthday. Happy Birthday Buddy!
* * * * *
Kim can feel the babies moving with her hand now. Of course, they immediately stop as soon as I put my hand on her belly. See? They already know I'm the disciplinarian of the house. ;)
* * * * *
We have our multiple pregnancy prenatal class tomorrow from ten to four. Full report on Monday.
Have a good weekend!

Longest. Election. Ever.
As much as the Canadian Political Landscape frustrates me, I am so glad I'm not an American voter.
Presidential elections occur every four years on November 2nd but the run up to the election starts around a year and a half to two years earlier. Last night Kim and I were talking about the election and I explained roughly that the current events are all about figuring out who the candidates for each party are going to be through state primaries and caucuses. For a through description see this webpage but basically they are mini-elections for each party in each state to choose delegates that will vote for the candidates in the party national conventions. Its similar to how the Electoral College chooses the president in a presidential election.
Confused yet?
Anyway, the point is this: for the past 6-8 months each party has had their presidential candidates running for the nomination up for grabs. Then once both parties have picked their candidate, we finally get to see them sling mud at each other for the actual election.
To me its too much. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.
Update: I took an online quiz and apparently my views on the topics quizzed matched very closely with Barak Obama which surprised me, I thought I was more of a Hillary Clinton supporter. Not that I get a vote.

Sore
Its amazing how much and how quickly the body's physical fitness degrades. I was off from Jiu Jitsu for about three weeks due to my surgery and Christmas holidays. This past Monday was my first class back and I was exhausted by the end of it and sore the next day even though it was not an overly strenuous class.
Then today I had my second class back and I was practically shaking from exhaustion at the end of it. Sad really. Next year I'll have to work harder over the break at getting some exercise.
Regardless, its good to be back fighting the weight monster with a fresh exciting year ahead.

In A Fog
In a fog both literally and figuratively.
Now that Christmas is over, our life is teetering on the edge. Behind us the well trod ground of marriage of ten years, visits with the Kids, family, and friends. Ahead the unknown chasm of parenthood of our twin boys and all the changes that will occur. The waiting is the hardest part and yet its only 4 shorts months or thereabouts.
There is still lots to do in the meantime. Preparing the nursery with repairs, painting, wallpapering the border, assembling the cribs, stockpiling diapers... but it all seems like restless fidgeting. Bring on the babies! I'm ready and that's all the matters.

Comfortable Computing
When I moved away from home, my first computer chair was a decrepit metal and plastic monster weighing a metric ton and bleeding stuffing from a crack in its centre seat that was mostly sealed with duct tape. My mother got it for free from her work and it was better than a cheap folding chair (albeit not by much). Being the practical sort, I never gave it much thought and an old towel pinned into place avoided the sticky edges of the duct tape from removing any more hair from my legs in the summer.
When we got married, I seem to remember that old chair quickly going away and us using Kim's old computer chair for a while. Eventually that gave out and we purchased a used office chair from a used office furniture store in Ottawa, a nondescript large grey chair that was in decent shape and fairly comfortable. That did us for a few years but lacked any proper back support and was uncomfortable to stay in for any length of time.
More recently we purchased a cheap chair from the local grocery store. Not the cheapest; it had arms, adjustable height, and decent comfort. But not the best quality either. One of the Kids broke the back the first weekend we had the chair by leaning on it and bending its rotating joint back to far and busting the plastic. The chair was still serviceable but fragile, and more recently the seat has become thin and hard to our buttocks. With Kim getting heavier and more spare time now that she is done work, it was proposed that new office chair was desirable.
So off to Staples Business Depot we went and we spent half and hour or so sitting in various chairs on display and pontificating on their comforts, options, and price. Finally we settled on a nice solid leather "executive's chair" that is very comfy and sophisticated compared to my original old green beast. Last night it was in and I picked it up and put it together in the living room. Its big in our little office but I definitely appreciated the smoother ride, and the next movie night we have with the kids I think I'll use the office chair to watch it from, its that comfortable.

Busiest Christmas Ever!
Kim and I are not known for our quiet holidays its true, but this year seemed to set a record for pure miles driven and bodies exhausted. Perhaps it was just being sick near the end that made it feel so much more busy than previous years, or maybe it was the extra driving that got tacked on in small increments until almost every day included a hour or two or more in the car. Don't know for sure, but here is the report and you can judge for yourself.
Dec 21: Supposed to be the last day of work but we had our ultrasound in the middle of it so I didn't go. We found out we are having two boys, Lukas and Sean. No, Lukas is not named after Lukas Rossi, we had the named picked out years before we ever heard of him. Sigh.
Dec 22: Some shopping including me getting Kim's stocking stuffers. Did a lot of house cleaning which was sadly overdue.
Dec 23: Wrapping, getting stuff ready to go tomorrow, my parent's dropped by with my Christmas/Birthday gift, an awesome step/extension ladder. I love it and can't wait for the spring to come so I can use it to take down the lights. I'll be the envy of the neighbourhood (especially Steve).
Dec 24: The Craziness begins. Its Kim's mother's birthday and Kim likes to see her mother if at all possible on Christmas Eve. We are going to be there on Christmas Day so the idea was floated about going up and staying overnight, but neither Kim nor I sleep very well away from home so I decided a little extra driving would not hurt. We go to Brockville, celebrate Pauline's birthday, then drop by Greenbush to exchange gifts with my parent's and sister before going home. Driving: ~150 km
Dec 25: Merry Christmas! Back in the car, back to Brockville, celebrate Christmas. All good times. Driving: ~75 km
Dec 26: Into Brockville to get some fruit and chocolate for a gift basket for my Grandparent's, and then to Athens to visit them for a bit before heading back to Greenbush for my family's Christmas dinner. More good times. Then back to home. Driving: ~110 km
Dec 27: Ah, our free day between the families and the visit with the Kids. Except we have a doctor's appointment in Ottawa. So into the car again. After the appointment we hit St Laurent Mall for some crib shopping before going to Toys 'R' Us on Merivale to buy our cribs, mattresses, and order a dresser. Then to Ikea before going home again. During all this activity I'm feeling under the weather, light headed and zonked. That evening I develop the first tingling of cold sores. Driving: ~110 km
Dec 28: Quiet day, I'm feeling better, we do some grocery shopping, pick out a new office chair we are in desperate need of. After dinner we drive to get the kids and bring them home for a few days. Driving: ~190 km
Dec 29: My Father's 50th birthday was on the 28th, so today is his party. We go to Greenbush where I help my sister with the food preparation and such and a good time was had by all. He was resplendent in the Sens jersey we bought and personalized for him with "MCCANN" and the number 1 on the back. We go back to Carleton Place in my parent's van so I can go pick up the cribs and mattresses we purchased from Toys R Us. Driving: ~125 km
Dec 30: In the morning I drive into Ottawa to get the cribs and some CD towers from Ikea and get that all back home. Then I take the van back to Greenbush and return with the car. Driving: ~154 km. Halfway back to Greenbush I feel uneasy in my stomach. I have some lunch hoping it will pass but by the time I am home I am outright nauseous and take some Gravol and lie down a bit. I feel a little better and put together the CD towers but then I feel even more nauseous and start to get cold, really bone chilling cold. I laid down again and this time under the blankets. It was surreal, I'm in bed with pants, shirt, sweater, slippers, and extra blanket while Kim is downstairs in t-shirt and shorts. Anyway I sleep the evening away while Kim and the Kids have a movie night. By the time Kim is coming to bed I'm feeling mildly better and less cold.
Then soon after going to bed, who is up in the bathroom with nasties coming from top and bottom? Not me, Kim! She spends the night with the bucket and bowl and by the morning she is finally able to go to bed.
Dec 31: Kim's dead asleep and I feel like death warmed over with several trips to the bathroom myself (I'll leave the gory details to your imagination) and trying to look after three kids. We decide that we are going to be no fun today or tonight so I feel good enough to drive the kids home in the afternoon. Come home, force ourselves to eat some food (well me more than Kim) and go to bed before nine. Happy New Year indeed. Driving: ~190 km
Jan 1: I'm feeling better when I get up except for several more trips to the bathroom. Fortunately the rest of the day is trip free. Kim is feeling better. And thankfully we don't have to go anywhere because the weather outside is frightful (but inside, so delightful) so with simply no place to go, we said let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Jan 2, today: back at work, back at blogging, and mostly recovered from whatever it was that I had. Kim is not working anymore so she can continue to relax, build up strength, and eat and drink.
Finally tally, around 1100 km driven in eight days. Plus innumerable trips to the washroom. I'm almost glad to be back at work so I can relax!
