"Atheism is Not the Opposite of Religion"

Excellent post for those confused by what exactly Atheism is: Atheism Is Not The Opposite Of Religion

Recent reading and soul searching has made me finally admit out loud that I believe there is no supreme being of the universe, i.e. atheism. Surprisingly taking this stand makes me feel very threatened by a world that so embraces belief and tends to consider those who do not as moral-less heathens who act like sociopaths.

I don't think that we know enough to definatively say that a god (or gods) exist.

Considering we don't even know how the inner mechanics of our own planet work - let alone how our brains function - I think it's more than a little pretentious to claim any firm knowledge on whether or not any of our religions (or all of them) are correct, or not.

Of course, humans are an inherently egotistic race - we love to think we understand ourselves and the world.

This is why I'm uncomfortable being anything except an agnostic.

Theism and Nosticism are different measuring sticks, one describing beleif and one describing knowledge.
You would be an agnostic theist while I would be an agnostic atheist.

I mean Gnosticism, I'm such a fool.

I guess rather you would be an agnostic unsure :P

Yeah - that probably best describes it. I'm a true fence sitter in this debate.

One of my favourite parts about reading Obsidian Tempest is Bill's openess about his philospohical and spiritual journey.

I was firmly in the atheist camp for many years, but have slowly found myself migrating to agnosticism. (Nothing like becoming a parent to make you want to believe in a supreme being that can watch over your little ones!)

BTW, how did you ever make out with unitarianism, Bill?

The philosphy search sort of stalled once I settled on identifiying Existentialism as the current system guiding my life right now. Spring kicked in and really took over my free reading time.

I shall be returning to the philosphy journey in the next couple weeks.
